NB Power has taken steps to prevent future spills of heavy water like the one in May at Pt. Lepreau. Paul Thompson, the utility's manager of regulatory affairs at Lepreau, says supervisors at the nuclear power plant did not have adequate training on a piece of test equipment and 300 litres of radioactive heavy water spilled. Thompson told the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission yesterday that staff had undergone some training but there was a problem with the actual procedure. He said supervisors couldn't provide adequate guidance during a pressure test when a relief valve opened too soon.
